Why Reamde Keeps Showing Up in the Techno-Thriller Conversation

Reamde by Neal Stephenson is a 39-hour techno thriller that trades his usual medieval digressions for a global chase across three continents. This reamde audiobook review covers the plot, the narration, and whether it belongs in your techno thriller audiobooks rotation.

I'll be honest: I picked up Reamde expecting another Anathem-style slog. What I got was Stephenson on his best behavior — a thriller with actual momentum, held together by one of the most uncomfortable ideas in modern tech: that a fictional gold currency in a video game can set off a real-world shootout.

What Reamde Is Actually About

The setup: Richard Forthrast, a border smuggler who went legit, built a massively multiplayer online game called T'Rain. Inside that game, players can buy gold with real money. The book's engine ignites when a ransomware virus infects players' computers and starts hijacking those gold transactions.

The Narration: 39 Hours in One Voice

Malcolm Hillgartner narrates, and he carries the whole thing solo. That matters because this book is dialogue-heavy — the Russian mobster alone has enough monologues to fill a season of TV.
